Family History Photo Monday: Carol Chester on the Runway

When she was 15 (right, Mom?), my Grandma Carol won a trip to the Chicago World's Fair.  She designed and made an entire outfit (I read one document that said she had to "style" it as well - choose the shoes and accessories) and was picked among hundreds of applicants (through 4-H, I believe) to compete in Chicago for a chance to go to Europe.  I found this photo (along with several others of her wearing this outfit in different poses) and I think this is the outfit she made for the competition.  She looks about the right age, too.  (The young man standing behind her is a cousin, I think.)  Even if this isn't the blouse and skirt she made for the contest, she probably still made it.  I've read her high school diary and she often made her own clothes.  Check out the high fashion!  For real - she had great taste. :)

She's adorable. And Melissa's Chloe looks so much like her!

The things I never knew about our grandparents. I've always known Grandma was a really excellent student and I suppose in my mind's eye, that somehow translated to more studious activities in her youth. Never would I have imagined a fashionista designing clothes in order to win a trip to the World's Fair! How great is she?!

That really is a nice outfit! The shoes are interesting - you could find some just like that in a store today. I guess shoes don't go out of style.

Oh good- I thought that was Sean Penn standing behind her. What amazing handiwork! She looks so cute! Of course she won :)

I'm not even in your family, but I love this series. :-)

Now I can see where you get your sewing abilities. You come by them genetically.

Thanks again for the car seat cover. They loved it!

I think Grandma was at least seventeen in this picture. She was really a perfectionist seamstress! I'm not sure which cousin that would be in the picture but he also looks a lot like her brother. You choose such wonderful pictures!

I came to post, then read the other comments before I wrote (so as not to just reapeat other's thoughts) Well what do you know but that ALLISON has said exactly what I was thinking (just like a little sister to steal the good ideas). I TOO was going to mention how much I saw Melissa's Chloe in this particular shot of Grandma. That is either super cool that we both thought it, or I am totally losing my ability for original thought.

Love the shot of Grandma. I have recently been watching a series on TV about researching family history and I continue to be amazed by what these details of our ancestors live mean to us and affect us today. Thanks for sharing.

I am finally posting a comment. I always read your blog from Reg's computer, and I have strict no comment rules from Reg...since the incident where he asked the neighbor out to lunch (only it was me commenting in his name)...anyways, laughing at all the posts, especially "Jelly Belly" he he!

I just sat through two episodes of Project Runway and this outfit blows them all away! I love it and I would totally wear it. Doesn't anyone else see my sweet Helena Carol in Grandma's face? I have always told Helena that she has her Grandma Lee's nose.
