Sew & Tell Friday: Amy Butler Challenge

First of all, make sure you scroll back up and check out Amy's blog today.  I know I'm going to. :)

I should save this post for Friday, but I can't wait.  Amylouwho issued an Amy Butler Challenge almost a month ago and I was kind of sad because I'd just done a really cool little quilt with Amy Butler fabric and I'd also just assessed the stash and put myself on a fabric fast.  But I couldn't stand to do nothing.  I have a sweet friend who is recently obsessed with making skirts for her little girl, so I had her teach me.  By the time we got to the hard parts (every part of making clothes is hard to me, but whatever) it was late and I was delirious.  Every time I tried to gather the skirt, my thread would break.  Swear words.

That first draft was okay, but I knew I could do better.  I used my full punch card at Material Girls this morning and bought enough of my favorite Amy Butler fabric (the blue) plus a few prints I haven't used yet.  Then I came home and busted out the cutest skirt in the world.  IN THE WORLD.  Bridget sang show tunes and worked on her art.

That's right, I had her pose on my Amy Butler quilt to show how unfair it was to have an Amy Butler Challenge a few weeks after finishing that quilt.
Orange is my color these days.  Now she's standing on the back of the quilt.
Bridget wanted to keep it on and show everyone she knows.  Best compliment ever. :)

SO SO SO CUTE! I love it! I need to make another skirt like this for alison, I love the mixy-matchiness of it all. Great job!

Get that kid an agent! (The skirt is adorable. This is the perfect time to start learning to sew clothes - when they still love everything you make.)

WOW! I'm in love with your quilt, the skirt, and you ADORABLE model! Okay, but that quilt is AMAZING!

I totally understand your gathering/broken thread drama and swearing. I went through the same thing with the ruffles on my bag, and I finally just filled a bobbin with my hand quilting thread (which is a lot stronger than "regular" thread) and just sewed with that on my machine and then tugged to make the ruffle. It worked great!
