Quilts and Sewing Projects

My favorite thing is to make quilts that remind me of the kind my Great Grandma Rhoda would make and that makes me happy.  I use mostly Quiltsmart patterns because they have simplified the classic quilt blocks and made curved piecing a possibility. My favorite fabrics to use are French General, 3 Sisters, Lakehouse, and Sarah Jane.

In December 2012 I mailed a thoughtful gift to my sister Jen for her 40th birthday. The birthday came and went and Jen and I never talked about her gift. Weird. Sometime in January I asked if she ever got her birthday gift (in December) from me and she said no. WHAT?! I was DEVASTATED to find that out. Her 40th birthday came and went and I said and (apparently to her) did nothing. As soon as I found out, I started working on a quilt for her bed, the Irish Chain a few photos above. She and I are Irish twins! And we have Irish ancestors. Perfect. It felt so good to do something epic to celebrate a 40th birthday, so I decided to make queen or king-size quilts for each of my sisters and sisters-in-law when they turn 40. I've made two more since Jen's, one for Katy and one for Allyn. They might know it's coming, but I try to keep it a surprise. I've used designs and fabrics that I love and that remind me of the sister I'm making it for. It's always pretty epic and it makes me happier than any other project I do.
