Diary of a Cheap Woman: Week One

Things I can live without:

1. Some of the clothes in my closet. Several items that have disappointed me in some way (what is this color "punch" you speak of, J.Crew?) and owed me. I took them to a consignment shop this morning. The two recent high school graduates ("Can you believe that people are in school right now and we're not there - we're here at work?!") looked over my bag of neatly folded, gently used items and declared that they could only take two of them. The others were good name brands (lest I start to cry), but they were older than the store likes to accept. Joke's on you, dummies, you took the oldest thing in that bag.

2. A cell phone. And I have been living without it. Unfortunately, Bridget and I were right outside Brian's building (I didn't know our consignment adventure would be so close or I would have told him before I left the house) and we couldn't call him so that he could have lunch with us.

3. The truck I saw while driving around today. Apparently it was a landscape rock and soil delivery truck. The slogan on the back (in a beautiful font) was, "Just another 'DUMP' in progress." Yes, dump was in all caps. Classy.

Things I can't live without:

1. MAC Cosmetics. Every one of my eyeliner pencils is a pathetic nub. This morning I tried to sharpen the "Blooz" nub and the millimeter of pencil fell to its death in the bathroom sink. I used the money I made on my consignment items for a discount on some new make-up. Bonus that I had finally collected six used MAC containers and it was time for them to give me a free lipstick! It only took me five years.

2. Bridget and Clara reminded me yesterday that making your own fun is pretty cheap. They were laughing hysterically because Bridget was the horse and Clara was trying to catch her and go for a ride. Then Bridget suggested a game of Bite My Arm, -K-?

I could definitely live without a lot of clothes in my closet, and actually, I realize this about every 4 months. I have two huge bags for DI next to my closet.

I could not live with a cell phone. We don't even have a landline. I've very much beholden to technology.

RE your No. 3 from the first list: I think there's something wrong with the people in my small [conservative, mostly LDS] town. We have two competing landscape companies. The slogan of one is, "You can't smoke our grass!" and the slogan of the other is, "We'll get you laid."

Yeah. We're real classy up here too.

In sidebar news, how are you loving Tess of the D'Ubervilles? I almost named Tres Theresa Clare (with the intention of calling her Tess) -- my gggparents were milkmaids and servants in the same region of England and at the same time, so I've always loved Thomas Hardy. But then I realized that I couldn't because Dos's name, when shortened (as it often is), rhymes with Tess. It's important to minimize kids' plausible deniability ("But Mom, I didn't hear you call me...").

Oh well.

I love it! I can't wait to see what you do without next...I am already in suspense. If it makes you feel better, I put myself on a money diet, Reggie calls it a budget, but I am way to free spirited to be on a budget...the nerve!

Ummm...to...I mean too free spirited.

Cheap fun is the best - and makes for the best pictures, too! Love our girls; and the fun times they always bring us. Thanks again for watching Clara for me!

The pictures are beautiful.

I fully support you in buying MAC. Once you go MAC, you can't go back. Some things are worth paying for.

Since Tess of the D'Urbervilles isn't an assignment, I'm going very slowly. I read it for school 9 years ago and I'm a little disappointed at my comments in the side margins. I missed all the truly beautiful moments last time. (Love the name Tess. Can you believe I know someone with that name, though? I guess only the names of ex-girlfriends of Brian's are totally off limits.)

Are you keeping track of these awesome slogans, Kristina? :)

Hi Nicole!

I saw your comment on Kristina's blog and I agree, I think we are long lost kindred spirits.

Some items I've noticed by strolling through your blog: we both like, no love the Olymics, we both love The Soup and appreciate Joel, we both love getting free food from relatives homes, and we both seem to have an ant problem in our homes. What more in common do blogging friends need?

I'm happy the blogging world has finally brought us together!

Maren aka Prison Maren :)

I just came across your blog from Maren's and it's cute!

Good job on collecting six MAC containers. I am working on my "collection" and it takes forever!

You've inspired me. I picked up my cell phone the other day and realized we don't actually need it. As soon as our wicked contract is up, it goes! So there!
