I've never been a big fan of New Year's Eve. Too much pressure to have the BEST TIME EVER and the party is too long. (Midnight? What?) This year, in an effort to help Katy and her family have a uniquely "Utah" experience, we decided to join Dan and Kristi (and Clara and Edward and Aunt Marci) at the Alta Torch Parade. At the last minute Kristi found a backpack for Brian to take Bridget in. Dan already has one for Clara. So our two little girls (and Dan, Kristi and Brian) were going to BE in the torch parade.
What is the torch parade? A few hundred skiers are taken up in the lift, handed a flare, then they ski down the mountain without poles. A few fireworks accompany this beautiful sight. Here's a picture from a professional:
Amazing, right? Also cold. But amazing enough that the cold is bearable. In the parking lot Clara told everyone she was going to, "Ski Alta."
Bridget had no idea what was about to happen. Neither did I, really. I got nervous when I saw the lift and thought about Bridget riding up it on Daddy's lap.
The light faded fast, so most of my shots were lame with the flash, or a little psychedelic without it. We watched Kristi, Dan (holding Clara) and Brian (holding Bridget) walking toward the lift...
Then we waited for the the cannon (two n's?) to go off and the skiers to come down.
The fun finally started and I got NO good shots of the parade itself. Hopefully that first photo that I stole from Alta's blog gives you a good idea. Dan texted me when they were about to come down, so I met the skiers right at the bottom.
Brian said Bridget asked for Mommy once as the lift took off up the mountain, then asked, "Almost done?" a dozen or so times. When Brian skied off the lift, though, she giggled and asked to see Clara and talked all the way down. That's my girl! So brave.
After that amazing sight, we went to the Party of the Century at Melissa and Jeff's. I didn't have the energy (worrying burns calories, right) to take pictures or be any good at Scattegories (sp?), but I had a great time. Thanks, Melissa!

Crazy fun! Wow, that made me nervous just reading your blog Nicole!
That's cool! And you're a much braver mom than I would be in that situation!
I've never heard of the torch parade, that's awesome! I would be so worried about my kiddo hitting the slopes too, I'm glad they made it down safe. Sounds like you had a great New Years, ours was lame. I'm hooking up with you guys next time!
The girls were way braver than I was. I was a bit cold, even with my five layers looking like the Stay-puffed Marshmallow Man. Thank you for joining us - we did have a blast!
That really is beautiful. I'm impressed with Brian's skiing ability. Doing it with a child on his back must have been hard.
Happy New Year.
okay- i know i left a comment on this post a few days ago. did you delete it?
anyway-it looks like you all had a blast together. i cannot believe you let brian take bridget up on a ski lift in a backpack and then ride on his back down a mountain on skis. i am proud of you. i am having a heart attack thinking about it.
