An Easter for the Rest of Us!

When I was a kid, Easter meant a new dress, ham and "yellow" potatoes for dinner, and an Easter basket with mostly M & Ms and peeps. I always traded my peeps for Jen's chocolate. (Peeps and cotton candy are the two worst treats ever invented.) For the last 11 years Easter means ham and cheesy potatoes for dinner, maybe some new pantyhose and hiding eggs with my husband's family. Grandma fills almost 100 eggs with candy, then my sisters-in-law and I help her hide them in the back yard. (Sometimes we're "out west" for the egg hunt, but not in March. Brrrr!) This year we had a corner for Bridget's eggs. She caught on a little and found some outside of her corner, too. She will never match the intensity of her cousins - they are champion egg hunters.

No trip to Grandpa and Grandma's backyard is complete without checking over the fence to see if the sheep are awake and ready for some of Grandpa's old vegetables. One of the first noises Bridget made was "BAAAAA!" She would say that every time we pulled up to her Grandparents' house. For a while, I think she thought that was Grandpa's name. Looking for the sheep is serious business.

It occurs to me that I don't post enough pictures of my handsome husband. I was sitting across the room from these two and noticed how beautiful they are. And they're fun to be with, too. :)

Bridget barely woke up in time for church yesterday and when we got home from church, she needed a nap more than she needed candy, so we waited until late afternoon to dress her up again and do some Easter basketing. She did a few laps around the basket before she dug in.

We spent the evening at Makenzie & David's house with a second ham and cheesy potato dinner (good thing you can never have enough of those). Brian and I also revisited the dessert we brought to his family's party only this time we got to try it. (Look for the recipe on Seven Bum Kitchen but be advised that four balloons in a row popping and getting warm chocolate all over me and the kitchen made me swear on Easter Sunday.) I think everyone who tried it will agree that Dreyer's Slow-Churned Strawberry Ice Cream is the best ever. Bridget kept trying to make out with poor Gabriel. He endured it while it was happening, but then he cried for his Mommy afterward. Ha!

So glad you had a nice time (and double the dinner - lucky you)! Bridget is so sweet in her dress. Poor Clara's is still hanging in her closest. Boo.

I feel SO much better knowing that somebody else in this world had a slight anxiety attack over those chocolate balloon concoctions. I really did swear when I lost balloon #4, covered my new shirt in milk chocolate and had guests arriving in t-minus 5. The chocolate dishes were a HIT, but Noah definitely kept his distance from me for a good four hours or so.

Could you figure out why they were popping? The first 5 we did worked perfectly yesterday, then they all started popping. I think it was because the balloons were touching the bottom of the saucepan during the dipping. I had white chocolate on my eyelids until I looked in the mirror 2 hours later. Ick.

Oh, I actually just melted my chocolate in the microwave, so they didn't have a saucepan to touch. But I wonder if maybe they were hitting the BOWL. Good call!

Whatever the reason, I just know it made for a very tense few minutes in the Riley kitchen.

Long live Peeps! But these days you would have a very tough time getting my chocolate from me.
Maybe you guys need tougher balloons. (I have no intention of ever trying that recipe) You could use bra cups!
